2019 Commencement

As you prepare for Commencement, no doubt your thoughts will eventually turn to food.  We've got lunch covered and other options, too.

Below is a summary of information to help you plan.


Lunch on the Lawn

Following the University-wide Commencement Ceremony (Phase I) graduates of the School of Arts & Sciences and the School of Engineering are invited to enjoy a Light Lunch presented by Tufts Dining.

Complimentary Lunch on the Lawn Tickets

Each graduate will receive three complimentary tickets for the Light Lunch on the Lawn with their marching order cards. These tickets are issued at Dowling Hall. One ticket is to be used by the graduate; the other two are for the graduate’s guests.

Additional Lunch on the Lawn Tickets

Additional Light Lunch on the Lawn tickets may be purchased for family and friends from the Tufts Dining Administrative Office located at 89-91 Curtis Street in Somerville between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from Monday, April 1st, to Wednesday, May 15th at 5 p.m. Tickets are limited and sold on a first come first serve basis.  Tickets are $10.00 each payable by cash or personal check, MasterCard, Visa or Discover.

  • Tickets must be presented in exchange for a boxed, freshly prepared Light Lunch.
  • Tickets will NOT be sold on Commencement Day.
  • Tickets are of no cash value and are not redeemable at any other campus dining location.

Lunch on the Lawn Details for Main Campus Ceremonies

Graduates participating in Phase II ceremonies located anywhere on the Main Campus can enjoy lunch on the Tisch Library lawn. Light Lunches will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. under the Tufts Dining tent. There will be a chicken lunch option and a vegetarian/vegan/gluten lunch option available. See Commencment Light Lunch on the Lawn Menu, Special Meals, and Ingredients below. Graduates who need a gluten-free dessert, vegan dessert, or a kosher meal, for themselves or their guests please see the Commencement Light Lunch on the Lawn Menu, Special Meals, and Ingredients section below.

Other Options for Food on Campus

Graduates and their guests who do not have Lunch on the Lawn tickets, but who would like to have lunch on campus may visit the Mayer Campus Center at 44 Professors Row. Food service will be available at the Commons Marketplace and Hotung Cafe on Commencement Day from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.


Breakfast will be available on campus Commencement Day in the following locations:

  • Carmichael Dining Center 7:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.
  • Dewick-MacPhie Dining Center 7:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.
  • Campus Center
    • Commons Marketplace 7:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. (and serving lunch until 3:00 p.m.)
    • Hotung Cafe 8:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. (and serving lunch until 3:00 p.m.)

Tufts Dining will also operate concession stands around campus on Commencement Day providing a variety of pastries, snacks, coffee and cold beverages. Look for our stands beginning at 7:00 a.m. in the areas near West Hall (off of Packard Avenue) and Eaton Hall.  There is an additional concession stand located near Cousens Gym on College Avenue.

Commencement Light Lunch on the Lawn Menu, Special Meals, and Ingredients

The Light Lunch on the Lawn menu and ingredients provided by Tufts Dining, are listed below. There are two choices for lunch available: Chicken and Vegetarian. The vegetarian lunch is also vegan and gluten-free. If you should require a vegan or gluten-free dessert, please call the Tufts Dining office at 617-627-3566 before Wednesday, May 15, and request it. 

All students are required to sign up for Kosher meals and Vegan or GF desserts to have the appropriate sticker placed on the lunch ticket(s).

Graduates who need a Kosher lunch for themselves or their guests should call the Tufts Dining office at 617-627-3566 before Wednesday, May 15, to request the Kosher lunch option(s).  There’s a Chicken or Vegetarian/Vegan Kosher lunch – both are Gluten-Free.
